Dewi Anggraeni was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and now lives in Melbourne. She is the Australia correspondent for TEMPO, and during the four years TEMPO was banned, worked for the Jakarta Post and FORUM Keadilan. She also writes for other publications in Indonesia Australia and Malaysia. Dewi speaks English, Indonesian and French, and writes in English and Indonesian. Apart from her journalistic work, Dewi also writes novels and short stories, gives lectures, helps conduct workshops for professional developments for teachers as well as business practitioners in acquiring social and cultural savoir-faire when conducting business in Asia. Her works have been published in Indonesian and English, both in Australia and Indonesia.She has had five books published in Australia: the first two novels, The Root of All Evil (1987) and Parallel Forces (1988), a trilogy of novellas, Stories of Indian Pacific (1993), another novel, Journeys through Shadows (1998), and a bilingual collection of short stories, Neighbourhood Tales (2001) all by Indra Publishing, Melbourne. Stories of Indian Pacific was written with the assistance of the Literature Board of the Australia Council, and Journeys through Shadows received assistance from Arts Victoria. She has also contributed articles, essays and short stories to several anthologies, in Australia and Indonesia, published among others by Allen
